“Cyclops”, two views of this fetal monster delivered by section

By Anjum Andrabi · Originally published June 10, 2007

A historical entry from the OASIS animal picture blog. Original observations and discussion are preserved; this entry has not received a new veterinary review. Some photographs show clinical procedures.

Cyclopia is a teratology (meaning birth defect) wherein the development of the face of the animal is so affected that it has only one eye towards the center of its head.  The term cyclops has its origin from the Greek and later Roman mythology, where it refers to primordial race of giants having a single eye in the centre of their foreheads.

This calf was delivered at a veterinary hospital in Kashmir by a cesarean section. The animal was still born (meaning dead  at birth). Its quite rare to see such a distinct cyclopia in calves.

The causes of such fetal monstrosity is not well understood but many substances have been incriminated in its occurance. Predominantly certain alkaloids including cyclopamine, jervine, and cyclopasine are known to cause cyclopia among other birth defects when consumed during early pregnancy. These alkaloids are found in some plants that the animals encounter during grazing especially of the Veratrum spp. These plants and many other alkaloids also cause abortions at various stages of pregnancy. Ewes have been know to be especially susceptable to Cyclopia from grazing on the Veratum plants.

  • Kay says:

it’s a disorder called holoprosencephaly, which is caused when the embryo’s forebrain doesn’t divide properly. the result is a single-lobed brain, facial deformities and often death.

  • Viv says:

they mix n mach animals why?? i mean it looks like a D-formed horse! PEOPLE IF UR TRYING 2 MAKE A UNICORN THATS THE CLOSES UR GONA GET SO STOP IT ALREADY!!!

  • zurya says:

    this is too cool..

  • Seth says:

It’s a horse. It didn’t properly develop. It happens more often than you would think. It happens from too much inter-breeding. That is probably the case with this one.

  • vampiress says:

ok iv seen weird stuff but thats got to be 1 of the worst…

  • Arthur says:

Holoprosencephaly: is a type of cephalic disorder. This is a disorder characterized by the failure of the prosencephalon (the forebrain of the embryo) to develop. During normal development the forebrain is formed and the face begins to develop in the fifth and sixth weeks of human pregnancy. (The condition also occurs in other species, as with Cy, the Cyclops kitten.) Holoprosencephaly is caused by a failure of the embryo’s forebrain to divide to form bilateral cerebral hemispheres (the left and right halves of the brain), causing defects in the development of the face and in brain structure and function.

    That’s it :)

ha it’s not a Juan Cabana… god I hope none of these people are ever faced with a deformed child…
sure it could be a fake, but I doubt it… if someone was going to make a fake, I’m sure they’d rather make a sea creature, merman or some other kind of fantastical beast rather than a deformed farm animal.

  • Jess_B says:

nothing is licking it. that is a person wearing baggy surgical gloves.

  • fauna unnold says:

oh my gosh that is the grosses thing ever…
it looks like cow with an over sized head and eye!!!

  • linkuto says:

this is not a miracle it is just a deformed cow if all cows were like this when we would see a normal cow we would say ik!

  • George D. says:

It looks like a turtle with like disorders. Majorrr disorders. Why does it have hair all over its lips?? All I gotta say is ew. That is disgusting but props to the girl that made the Unicorn joke. Haha

  • J. Obvious says:

If you look closely at the face.. the parts are sewn on.. someone probably killed a bunch of animals and sewed them together..

  • Nancy says:

This can also happen to lambs. If the ewe (female sheep) consumes a particular type of plant on the right day of pregnancy, the chemicals in that plant will affect the development of the fetus, and cause deformations such as cyclops lambs.

  • meighan claburn says:

this is absolutely horrible…that poor thing.
its face is nasty…wtf is wrong with it?
i think im gonna throw up n my mouth….

  • Kas says:

    Awwww how cute

  • kenny says:

i was eating chicken when i first saw this

  • Paul R Wilson says:

Looks like it was diagnosed by ultrasound and the pregnancy terminated before the mare’s resourses and the breeder’s could be further wasted. The lack of fur indicates such. Some herb in the field did this. Some species of plants produce vicious poisons and should be weeded out!

  • Kate says:

Wow. Quite frankly, I can’t believe there are people stupid enough to think this is some sort of genetic experiment gone wrong.

I’m an Animal Science major, currently taking a course in Animal Breeding (and doing damn well in it, 98.6% and two perfect tests, folks!), so I can tell you what happened here. You have three phases in development; cleavage (where the cells split but no growth occurs), differentiation (where the limbs and organs form), and growth (where everything’s in place and it just needs to grow). Something didn’t happen in the differentiation phase like it should have. It happens. There’s no cruelty involved, there’s no genetic manipulation involved, it’s just something that occurs randomly. It happens with humans too.

And yes, it’s a cow…see the split hooves?

  • alysss says:

    omg….
    strange to say the least
i do agree, well done to the unicorn comment

    and is this really rare?
    or not?

  • RealMcCoy says:

Geez there are a lot of truly stupid people in this world. If you could READ, you might find that the DESCRIPTION AT THE TOP OF THE THREAD tells you what this is – it is not a fake or some kind of “experiment”. Nothing has been “stitched on” (those are HAIR FOLLICLES, you MORONS), and the animal (a COW, NOT a horse!) was delivered by C-section, and was probably dead before the vet even delivered it. In addition to being a cyclops (which is a NATURAL medical condition), the animal had hydrocephalus (commonly called “water on the brain”) and its upper jaw was missing (i.e., never formed). It is a “freak of nature”, probably caused by the mother ingesting some sort of poisonous plant during pregnancy.

  • RealMcCoy says:

Correction: this is the photo of the animal which is hydrocephalic, and with no upper jaw. The animal pictured on this page, also cyclops and delivered by C-section, also a cow, is a simple cyclops.

We are contaminating it(btw my english might suck :P)….as i was saying… we are polluting the world, and the younger generations will have to deal with this even more than the old ones. I hope with can get out of the big problem we are causing today.(omg…why in hell am i saying this …. <.<)

OMG! That is so freaky and ugly yet very sad! How did that poor whatever-it’s-called get an oversized tongue and a ginormous cyclops-looking eye?!!! The first one looks a little bit like a seal or walrus without tusks with oversized eyelashes, eye, tongue and a freaky moustache! The second one looks kinda like a dog who’s body didn’t get properly formed…….. Poor animals! (Or whatever it’s called.) BTW, do you think it’s because of the genes? OMG, when I first saw this, it freaked me out. Poor little things!

  • Zo Moor says:

It seems like it possibly may be a deformed calf and that’s why it died so young. usually something deformed by that degree won’t live comin’ outta the mom.

  • i says:

i feel sorry for the poor creature, its not its fault it was born like that it was just fate

  • Paul R Wilson says:

OK, the mother ate some evil alkaloid weed and the poison inhibited an enzyme or gene in the early embryo at some crucial moment. Hence the cyclopia -and the reduced oral cavity -which resulted in the tongue flopping around: no room for it in the mouth. The brain is too reduced and the THING can’t live long (like a nearly HEADLESS calf that lived but a few minutes. The head was the size and shape of a doorknob.).
I have also seen a photo of a hatching cyclops rattlesnake, app. snapping at something. I have NO idea of how long a cyclops snake can live.

  • Kathleen says:

Oh my God, to those people who are saying this is animal cruelty and a fake and all that rubbish:

    1. I’m a vegetarian and very much about animal cruelty, but NOBODY harmed this animal. It was STILL BORN. It means that due to it’s disorder, it was born DEAD.

    2. It’s most certainly not a fake. It’s not that remarkable. Sure, it’s rare, but genetic disorders do occur. They can happen to any animal. Most animals (including humans) with very serious genetic conditions are never even born, as the mother has a miscarriage. And the few that survive the pregnancy are often still born. However, some do survive, of course.

  • Kathleen says:

P.S- In reply to the below comment, I’m only 17. But I have studied biology at school and dos cience at uni. And how can it be a mix of 2 animals? What would it be a mix of? A one-eyed animal and a cow? I don’t think so. Scientists have better ways to spend there time than mixing animals that won’t survive anyway.
*Also edit to my last comment: *against animal cruelty

It looks like a seal. Or perhaps a deformed cow? Whatever made birth to that, may have had a miserable time. I don’t know what it could be, all my guesses are, seal, cow, dog, horse, or a pig. The stuff around its eye is not stitches, its where your eyelashes come out. The defect has made it so the eyelashes didn’t grow I’m guessing. Also, this isn’t a genetic experiment. If you guys actually read the article you would know that they gave the scientific explanation as being a BIRTH DEFECT.

This is weird, but after you picture it with fuzzy fur and big eye lashes and maybe animated, I think it would look amazingly cute! And I thought the pig with the defect lasted about a week or so and they bottle fed it for a while untill it died (it was plump too).

thank you Rachel. It’s as if no one read the article. Still, it’s sad to see. You can see where it was dividing and you can even see two sets of eyelashes on its eye. The poor critter.

  • UnKnow says:

Ewww!!!! Its make me freak out!!!!

  • god says:

    Amazing!!!

  • (if you read this your an idiot) says:

    That’s absolutely fake

  • Scorien says:

Wow, none of you can read. It was a still birth. Meaning it was dead already. Poor thing.

  • Julie says:

I’m sorry, that terrifies me. Not because of how it looks,(well partially that) but because humans let animals breed together to create that. It could’ve been a regular animal, but the abusive people decided to have those animals breed together when each could’ve bred(I am not sure if that’s correct) with its own kind to make regular animals. That’s just my opinion.

  • mac says:

    eew so nasty

  • ilhesus says:

Did somebody skin a dead calf and placed one cow’s eye in the underside of its (or whatever’s) head?
    Erm Yes!!!

  • bob says:

wholy shit its hiddous ,and what the hell is it put theat thing in a zoo

  • JJ says:

    HOLY @%$#@$#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • To the IDIOTS that dont read says:

to the people who want to adopt the animal:

IT’S STILL BORN. IT’S DEAD. LOOKING AFTER IT WONT DO ANYTHING, BECAUSE IT WAS BORN DEAD.

how hard is it for people to maybe shut up for a few moments and read a few lines? Reading doesn’t kill you, it only informs you.

it’s a BIRTH DEFECT caused by some plant the mother ate during pregnancy guys. Get a grip and get over yourselves.

  • Riesha says:

That Thing Look a Mess I Fell Bad For That Thing… Is It Alive??????????

  • A.N. O'nyme says:

How a horse (or what ever it is ;)) can became sick like that?! Is green and red! It’s very horrible

  • Cory says:

People **** up! Read the damn article! and stop asking dumb ******* questions! It said in the article is was dead at birth so its long gone, so dont ******* ask. and what the **** is with you people saying it was from interbreeding with different animals, it is a cow, 100% god damn cow, there is no horse zebra, goose, or giraffe in there, just cow. And for **** sake the reason why it\’s demented (thats not a harsh word, its true, it is demented in many forms) is in the second god damn paragraph, it is a birth defect from the digestion of a dangerous material some cows might encounter by grazing on grass, and so if its eating and the cow is pregnant it just has the slightest chance of dementing it.

  • SHaDoW ROMANIA says:

    — This MoNsTeR it isn’t real !!! Or it is a ugly pig :))

  • angelbabe... says:

ITS A CYCLOPS COW BABY!!!! AWWWEEEESSSSSOOOOOMMMMMMEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Biochemist says:

(Sorry for my poor english, for i’m from Denmark.) I can say that cow has cyclopia. Cyclopia is a genetic defect, which may for example can occur by ingestion of the toxin 2-deoxyjervine. The toxin is for example found in the plant “corn lily”. Too much eating corn lily for some members in the Bovidae-family must deform the eyes, so two eyes become one twice as big eye in center. I don’t know how the green hooves became? But it isn’t a monster 🙂

  • Narong says:

  • anymonos or however you spell it says:

    wtf….cool

  • Lil Sara says:

I worked in the lab where this creature was made. They want you to believe that it is a deformed cow but it is not. I worked at this lab and there were ten of these creatures that we made with genetic manipulation. I was forced to have sex with all of them at gunpoint by the CIA. They eventually let me go but I am now taking care of five cow-human-pig-seahorse children. I can’t afford to feed them all. I keep them hidden in my basement. They are very expensive to feed. Some people said they are open to adoption, PLEASE HELP! Adopt my cumanigorses! 🙁

  • Tamara says:

These are some of the funniest comments I’ve read on a picture in my life. You guys are hilarious. For the love of god, read the article, though! It’s a totally natural occurrence. The mother ate a plant that harmed the cow’s development in the womb. I want to draw this little guy as he would appear if he had lived, hanging out in a pasture. He would be cute if he didn’t have all that fetal juice and diarrhea on him. When I draw it, I will post a link here! I bet he’d be a real heart breaker if he had lived. Imagine him winking at the lady cows; they wouldn’t be able to resist. 😉
